How to Activate Windows 11 After a Clean Install
After a clean install, Windows 11 usually reactivates on its own — no key entry needed — if your license is linked to a Microsoft account or was previously activated on the same hardware. If it doesn’t, there are three reliable ways to get it activated manually. This guide covers all of them in order of simplicity.
How Windows 11 license reactivation works after a clean install
When Windows activates, Microsoft records a hardware fingerprint (based mainly on your motherboard) alongside your license. After a clean install on the same hardware, Windows contacts Microsoft’s servers, matches the fingerprint, and reactivates automatically — no key required.
This automatic reactivation works when:
- Your Retail or OEM key was previously activated on this exact machine
- Your license is linked to a Microsoft account (most reliable path)
- The hardware hasn’t significantly changed since the last activation
It won’t work automatically if:
- This is a brand new PC that has never been activated
- You replaced the motherboard
- You’re activating on different hardware than before
Method 1 — Automatic reactivation via Microsoft account (easiest)
If you linked your Windows 11 license to a Microsoft account before the clean install, sign in with that account during or after setup. Windows will recognize the digital license and activate without asking for a key.
If Windows doesn’t activate automatically after sign-in:
- Go to Settings → System → Activation
- Click Troubleshoot
- Select “I changed hardware on this device recently”
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and select this device from the list
- Windows activates — done
Method 2 — Enter your product key manually
If your license isn’t linked to a Microsoft account, or you’re activating for the first time on this machine, enter your key directly:
- Go to Settings → System → Activation
- Click Change product key (or “Add a product key” on a fresh install)
- Enter your 25-character key — copy-paste from your purchase email to avoid typos
- Click Next → Activate

Method 3 — Enter your key during Windows setup
During a fresh Windows 11 installation, setup asks for a product key. You can enter it here or click “I don’t have a product key” to skip and enter it after installation.
Entering during setup ensures Windows installs the correct edition (Home vs Pro) automatically based on your key. If you skip and install the wrong edition, you’ll need to reinstall to switch.
Method 4 — Phone activation (works offline)
If your PC has no internet access, or online activation keeps failing, phone activation is the guaranteed fallback:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (right-click → Run as administrator)
- Run
slmgr /dti— this generates an Installation ID (a long number) - Call Microsoft’s automated activation line (US: 1-888-352-7140)
- Select “activation” and enter your Installation ID when prompted
- Receive a Confirmation ID from the automated system
- Run
slmgr /atp [Confirmation ID]— Windows activates immediately
Phone activation works with no internet connection — useful for air-gapped machines or environments with strict firewall rules.
What if activation still fails after a clean install?
Run through this checklist:

Do I need to enter my product key every time I reinstall Windows?
No — if your key is linked to your Microsoft account, Windows reactivates automatically after a clean install on the same hardware. Sign in with your Microsoft account during setup and Windows handles the rest.
Can I do a clean install without losing my Windows activation?
Yes. As long as you reinstall on the same hardware, activation carries over. The hardware fingerprint is preserved even when you wipe and reinstall. Use the official Windows 11 Media Creation Tool to create your install media.
My key activated before but now shows “not activated” after a clean install. Why?
Most likely the key isn’t linked to your Microsoft account, so Windows couldn’t match it automatically. Go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and re-enter it. Going forward, link it to your account to avoid this next time.
Will a clean install on the same PC use up one of my MAK activations?
