How to Activate Windows 11 with a Product Key
Activating Windows 11 takes about two minutes once you have a valid key. The process is the same whether you bought Retail, OEM, or MAK — and whether you bought from Microsoft or a reseller.

Method 1 — Settings (recommended)

Open Settings Press Win + I or click Start → Settings.

Go to System → Activation On a fresh install you may see “Add a product key” instead of “Change product key” — both lead to the same place.

Enter your 25-character key Format:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Double-check every character — 0 vs O and 1 vs I are common typos.4
Click Next → Activate Windows contacts Microsoft’s servers. With a working internet connection this completes in seconds. A green “Windows is activated” message confirms success.
Method 2 — Command Prompt (for when Settings fails)
Some OEM machines and domain-joined systems block activation through Settings. Use Command Prompt instead:

Open Command Prompt as Administrator Search for cmd, right-click, select Run as administrator.

Enter your key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX — a dialog confirms the key was installed.3
Activate online:
slmgr /ato — triggers activation against Microsoft’s servers. Another dialog confirms success or shows an error code.Method 3 — Phone activation (no internet required)
Use this when a corporate firewall or proxy blocks Microsoft’s activation servers.

Get your Installation ID: Run
slmgr /dti in Command Prompt (as Administrator). A long numeric Installation ID appears in a dialog — write it down.2
Call Microsoft activation: US: 1-888-571-2048 | UK: 0800 018 8354. Read the Installation ID to the agent — they provide a Confirmation ID.

Enter the Confirmation ID: Run
slmgr /atp [CONFIRMATION_ID]. Windows activates without any internet connection.📞 Phone activation tip: This is a routine call for Microsoft support — they handle it all day. Have your Installation ID ready before you dial and it’ll take under 5 minutes.
Activating during a fresh Windows install
The Windows 11 setup wizard asks for a product key partway through installation. You can enter it then or skip it by clicking “I don’t have a product key” and activate later from Settings once you’re on the desktop. Both approaches give you the same result.
Common error codes and fixes

| 0x8007007B | Can’t reach activation servers | Check internet connection. On a corporate network, use phone activation instead. |
| 0x803F7001 | No product key found | Go to Settings → Activation → Change product key and enter your key. |
| 0xC004C060 | Counterfeit key flagged by Microsoft | Contact your seller for a replacement immediately. |
How to check your activation status
- Settings: System → Activation — look for “Windows is activated with a digital license” or “Windows is activated”
- Command line: Run
slmgr /xpr— shows whether Windows is permanently activated (Retail/OEM) or has an expiry date (KMS)
⚠️ Expiry warning: If
slmgr /xpr shows an expiry date, your key may be KMS type rather than Retail or OEM. KMS keys need to phone home to a server every 180 days. Contact your seller — you may have received the wrong key type.Reinstalled Windows and now not activated?
If your hardware hasn’t changed, Windows often reactivates automatically after a reinstall — give it a few minutes with an internet connection. If it doesn’t:
- Try Settings → Activation → Troubleshoot — Windows can usually find the previous license automatically
- If that fails, re-enter your key through Settings → Activation → Change product key
- Replaced your motherboard? The previous activation may not carry over for OEM keys. Contact Microsoft support or your key seller.
