How to Install Microsoft Office with a Product Key

Installing Microsoft Office with a product key takes about 10 minutes. You don’t download directly from a disk anymore — the process runs through Microsoft’s servers using your key to verify the license and trigger the download.

🔗 Before you start: Make sure you have a Microsoft account (free at account.microsoft.com). The key links to your account, which means you can reinstall Office later without needing to re-enter the key.

Step-by-step installation

1
Go to setup.office.com Open a browser and navigate to setup.office.com. This is Microsoft’s official Office setup page — don’t download from anywhere else.
2
Sign in with your Microsoft account Use an existing Microsoft account or create a free one. This account becomes permanently linked to your Office license — use one you’ll remember and have access to long-term.
3
Enter your 25-character product key Click “Enter a product key” and type your key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Double-check each group before submitting.
4
Choose your country and language Select the region and language for your Office installation. This affects the interface language and regional settings in apps like Outlook.
5
Click “Download Office” Microsoft’s servers verify your key and prepare the installer. A small setup file (OfficeSetup.exe) downloads — this is the bootstrapper that downloads the full Office package.
6
Run the installer Double-click OfficeSetup.exe. Office downloads in the background (around 3–4GB) and installs automatically. The progress bar shows in the installer window — leave it running until complete.
7
Sign in when prompted Once installation completes, open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.). You’ll be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account — use the same account from Step 2. This activates the license.
✅ Activation confirmed: To verify activation, open any Office app → File → Account. You’ll see “Product Activated” with your Microsoft account email shown. If it shows “Unlicensed Product”, sign in with the correct account.

Reinstalling Office on the same or a new PC

Because the key is linked to your Microsoft account, you don’t need the key again for reinstallation. Just go back to setup.office.com, sign in with your account, and click “Install Office” — it detects your license automatically.

💡 Moving to a new PC: For Retail keys, your Office license moves with your Microsoft account. Sign in on the new machine and install. For OEM keys, the license is tied to the original hardware and officially cannot be transferred — though Microsoft sometimes allows it on a case-by-case basis via support.

Already have Office installed? How to activate it

If Office is already installed but showing “Unlicensed” or in trial mode:

  1. Open any Office app
  2. Click File → Account
  3. Click “Change Product Key” under Product Information
  4. Enter your 25-character key
  5. Click Activate

Office connects to Microsoft’s servers and activates. No reinstall needed.

Offline installation (no internet during setup)

If your machine has limited internet access, you can download the full Office installer offline from Office.com before transferring to the target machine:

  1. Go to office.com/myaccount and sign in
  2. Find your Office product and click “Offline installer”
  3. Download the ISO file (around 4GB)
  4. Mount the ISO and run Setup.exe on the target machine
  5. Activate using your key through File → Account once installed

Common installation problems and fixes

Problem Fix
Key already used Check if you previously linked it to a different Microsoft account. Go to account.microsoft.com → Services & subscriptions. If it’s there, sign in with that account and install.
“Something went wrong” during install Run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (Sara) — it diagnoses and fixes most Office installation failures automatically.
Old version of Office conflicting Uninstall the old version first via Settings → Apps. Or use the Office uninstall tool at aka.ms/diag/officeuninstall before reinstalling.
Activation shows “Unlicensed” after install Sign out of Office and sign back in with the Microsoft account the key was registered to. File → Account → Sign out, then sign back in.
Wrong edition installed (Home vs Pro Plus) Uninstall and reinstall. At setup.office.com, the correct edition downloads automatically when the key is detected.
⚠️ 32-bit vs 64-bit: Office 2021 defaults to the 64-bit installer, which is correct for all modern PCs. Only install 32-bit if you use very old 32-bit Office add-ins that don’t have 64-bit versions. You can change this during setup.office.com if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install Office on a Mac with a product key?

Yes, but Office 2021 Pro Plus is Windows-only. The Mac version (Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac) uses a different key format. If you’re on a Mac, make sure you’re buying a Mac-compatible key.

How long does Office take to download and install?

The installer itself is small. The full download is around 3–4GB — on a typical home connection, expect 15–30 minutes. Installation takes another 5–10 minutes after the download finishes.

Can I install Office on multiple computers with one key?

A single retail key activates on one PC. For multiple machines, you need a key per machine. Volume licensing covers multiple activations — see our license types guide for how that works.

What happens to my files if I uninstall Office?

Your documents are not affected by uninstalling Office — they’re just files on your drive. Uninstalling removes the applications, not your data.

My product key says “This key has already been used” — what do I do?

Check your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com → Services & subscriptions. The key may already be linked to a different account. If you bought from MyLegitKeys and the key is genuinely unusable, contact WhatsApp support for a replacement.
