A Windows 11 Pro product key is a 25-character code that unlocks the Pro edition of Windows — either upgrading an unactivated install or switching from Home to Pro. This guide covers what you get, how to use the key, and how the licensing works.
👉 TL;DR: Enter the key at Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. Windows activates in seconds. A Retail key stays with you when you upgrade hardware — an OEM key stays with the original PC.
What Windows 11 Pro includes over Home
The core Windows experience is identical between Home and Pro. What Pro adds on top:

If you already have Windows 11 Home installed and want to upgrade to Pro with a Pro key, the same Settings → Activation → Change product key path handles it. Windows upgrades in place — no reinstall, no data loss. It takes about 10 minutes.
Retail key vs OEM key — which did you buy?
Windows 11 Pro keys come in two types, and the distinction matters when you change hardware:
| Retail | OEM | |
|---|---|---|
| Price at MyLegitKeys | $19.99 | $24.99 |
| Transferable to new PC | ✓ Yes | ✗ No |
| Survives motherboard replacement | ✓ Yes | ✗ No |
| Best for | PC builders, upgraders | Fixed hardware, pre-builts |
For most personal use, Retail is the better choice. See our full guide to Windows license types for more detail.
Digital license vs product key
After you activate with a product key, Windows creates a digital license tied to your hardware. Future reinstalls on the same machine won’t need the key again — Windows detects the hardware and reactivates automatically during setup.
You can also link the digital license to a Microsoft account (Settings → Activation → “Add a Microsoft account”) — this means reinstalls on the same machine just need a Microsoft account sign-in, with no key required.
What if activation fails?
The most common errors and what they mean:
- 0xC004C003 — Key already activated on another PC. Contact your seller for a replacement.
- 0xC004F050 — Invalid key. Re-enter carefully — check 0 vs O, 1 vs I.
- 0xC004F034 — Key doesn’t match your edition. A Pro key won’t activate a Home install.
- 0x8007007B — Can’t reach activation servers. Check internet or use phone activation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Windows 11 Pro key work on a clean install?
Yes. During Windows 11 setup, enter the key when prompted (or skip and activate after). Either way it activates the same.
Can I use a Windows 10 Pro key to activate Windows 11 Pro?
Yes — Windows 11 Pro accepts Windows 10 Pro keys. Microsoft designed them to be cross-compatible for upgrade scenarios.
What’s a Windows 11 Pro MAK key?
A Multiple Activation Key — one key that activates Windows Pro on multiple machines (5 for the 5-PC version). Used by businesses and IT departments. Each machine activates individually from the key’s total count. See our license types guide.
Does Windows 11 Pro expire?
No. A Retail or OEM license is permanent — it doesn’t expire. Only KMS licenses (used in large enterprise environments) need periodic renewal.
Can I downgrade from Pro back to Home?
Not through a simple setting — downgrading requires a clean install of Windows 11 Home. In practice, there’s no reason to downgrade; Pro includes everything Home has plus the additional features.
